FreeFalling

by Carol Desjarlais
A cold breeze nipped at my heels today
Whined around the corner of my house
Pinged the chain link fence
Bothered the trunk of my tree
Bared its fangs at my back.

Summer was in a frenzy
Holding fast on to its soft colors
While Fall brushed against the scene
Painted a red tipped fingernail on each leaf
Slashed the trees with golds and yellows
Until the ground turned brown in despair.

Birds stroked the southern skylight
Hell bent on hurry to follow the sun
Pushing gray clouds from their eyes
Flailing against the wild winds that straddle them
Whipping them into their mournful goodbye.
